A pond built in the wrong location won’t fill reliably or may drain too fast. On wooded or heavily brushed properties, this assessment is often paired with a land clearing scope that opens up the site before excavation begins. Once the site is confirmed and the pond design is set, the mini excavator begins excavating the basin to the target depth — typically 8 to 12 feet at the deepest point for fishing ponds, shallower for stock watering impoundments. Side slopes are shaped at a safe, sustainable angle to resist erosion while providing stable bank access. Excavated material is stockpiled nearby for dam construction.
The dam is built using clay-heavy soil removed from the basin, placed in 6-inch lifts and compacted thoroughly between each pass. This step is critical — a dam that isn’t properly compacted will settle and leak, sometimes years after construction. Brent uses the skid steer to compact each lift before adding the next, building a dam that holds water pressure correctly.
A properly designed spillway is the difference between a pond that handles heavy rain safely and one that erodes and eventually fails. The overflow route is shaped and protected to manage peak flow from major rain events without undermining the dam or eroding the bank. Pipe spillways, emergency overflow channels, or both may be incorporated depending on watershed size and pond dimensions.
Once the basin, dam, and spillway are complete, the surrounding area is graded to blend natural drainage into the pond catchment and stabilize any disturbed soil at the perimeter. You walk the finished site with Brent before equipment leaves to confirm dimensions, dam height, and spillway placement all meet your expectations and the project plan.
